Vet and Groomer Visits
Grooming and medical maintenance are an important responsibility for a dog owner and can sometimes be challenging. If you're having anxiety or aggression problems with the vet or groomer, I can help you desensitize your pet so the necessary visits aren't as stressful. It usually starts with some at home exercises and maybe a follow up visit or two at the facility where the behavior issues are a problem. If you follow the treatment strategy, you'll see a huge difference in no time at all. KEY: You must learn to not be nervous or anxious yourself! Nail Trimming: Once I stopped being worried about cutting my girls quick when I trimmed her nails, she started trusting me to do it! You're more likely to be successful (especially in the beginning) if you've provided some structured exercise and don't try to pull her legs all around. Just grab the trimmers and confidently nip a little bit off each one. You can do it in less than a minute. If you can only trim one or two nails at a time, that's cool. Just make sure that when you engage you're successful, at least with one, and practice on the regular. You'll get more confident and your dog will get more tolerant and eventually the whole issue will be a memory. Remember: your dogs quick grows out with their nails, you're pretty much always safe if you just take off a quarter inch. Usually they'll need more than that, especially if they think we're trying to assault them, so practice weekly with a quarter inch, get one more nail the next time, keep your dog comfortable and reward him like crazy as soon as you've reached your goals for that session.
