NILIF - The Nothing In Life Is Free program
Adopting the NLIF program into your daily routine will make a huge difference, especially with dominant or working dog personalities. NLIF is based on the fact that dogs must work for everything they earn which teaches them to respect their superiors, no questions asked. In nature, that's what sustains their pack and keeps their personalities balanced. It's survival of the fittest out there no matter how many legs you've got. Humans confuse dogs by not understanding their body language, not monitoring and using our own body language, not enforcing boundaries or teaching them new things and coddling their instabilities (inadvertently rewarding them for unwanted behaviors because we think it will make them feel better). We must set a good example for our pups, making sure we're effectively communicating and they're getting the right signals. Regardless of our intention, dogs learn the behaviors we teach them through our own body language, tone and ability to enforce create and enforce the pack rules. A dominant dog is likely to consider himself the leader of an owner who doesn't enforce his own rules. That dog considers if it's worth it to him to listen this time because all he ever really hears is "blah blah blah" as he remembers how empty and meaningless her commands usually are. It's a lot like a spoiled little kid, except the problem is easier to rectify. :) Good Dog Owner's Biggest Challenge: Being Consistent. If we're not consistent, the dog won't be either. If we are, the behaviors that we focus on redirecting will change dramatically in a very short time and will last forever if we practice. It's just like learning to drive a car or ride a bike, with practice it becomes second nature- for you and the dog.
